Coronavirus Updates: US Clinches Deal With Johnson & Johnson For Potential Vaccine

North East residents have been urged to “take this seriously” as Covid-19 cases continue to rise rapidly across the region and calls are made for tougher lockdown measures.

Director of Public Health at Newcastle City Council, Eugene Milne

New rules were imposed from September 18 to try and combat a spike in cases across seven council areas.

But numbers have continued to rise at a worrying rate, with Newcastle now having the fifth-highest infection rate in England.

In its latest update on local lockdown measures across the country, the Department of Health and Social Care said that “cases are rising, and discussions are ongoing with local leaders” in Newcastle, Northumberland, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland, and County Durham.

While public health chiefs had expected case numbers to keep rising for a week or two before the effect of the measures could be seen, residents have now been warned to take urgent action to get the virus under control.

Prof Eugene Milne, director of public health for Newcastle, said: “We are continuing to see the virus spread locally and this isn’t entirely unexpected.

“New local and national restrictions have been introduced recently but these need time to take effect, and if they are to be effective we need people to incorporate them rapidly into their daily lives.

“We also know that the data is always a few days behind the real picture as there is the time it takes to process new cases to take into account.

“But that doesn’t get away from the fact that cases are rising, and it is on all of us to comply with the new regulations and guidance.

"Transmission rates will only fall if everybody takes this seriously and does what is being asked."
